Cyberpunk 2077 Has A Hype Problem

Delays, Lies & More Delays

In the time it's taken to start and get to this point in the article, it has happened again: Cyberpunk received yet another delay, this time by three weeks to December 10th.

The delay has been chalked up to poor optimisation on current-gen consoles, despite having been certified by both Sony and Microsoft.

This has resulted in a new level of backlash from a community CDPR worked so hard to retain all this time. The anger over this was only fuelled further by the co-CEO of CD Projekt Red, Adam Kiciński, claiming the infamous crunches were "not that bad", a statement he's since apologised for.

The company had previously promised that no crunches would occur during the development of Cyberpunk 2077, and that November would have been the final delay. Both those promises have been broken with several development horror stories now creeping out of the woodwork.

CD Projekt Red had always been in the good graces of gamers, but as more and more comes out from behind the scenes, the fewer fans can take it in stride. Not only that, but several individuals have taken the unacceptable step of sending death threats to the developers, simply because of the additional delay.

The burnout from so much hype has resulted in a split narrative between those lashing out at the devs for the delays, and those lashing out at the company for forcing harsher work weeks on those very same people.

Cyberpunk 2077 still remains one of the most discussed titles of this generation, but the question is whether ongoing conversations focus on the positives or negatives of the project, and whether CD Projekt Red can recover.

Fingers crossed the game truly does live up to anticipation, or if seven years of waiting were just too much.
