Dark Souls 3: 12 Crucial Tips & Tricks The Game Doesn't Tell You
6. How To Parry Effectively
Dark Souls 3's tutorial amounts to finding a bunch of markings on the ground - many of which you can easily sprint past if you're not careful. It's a far cry from the area-by-area breakdown of your abilities that DS2 had, and ends up leaving out the intricacies of something as essential as parrying.
To that end, parrying animations have changed slightly, in that it's not a case of just tapping the left trigger and hoping for the best. Instead, timing windows are tighter than ever, and the actual physical arc your shield makes through the air is what you need to line up with an enemy's attack.
It's quite hard to perfect, but try it against smaller enemies and you'll get there. Thankfully, if you hit it too late, your animation is no longer interrupted like in games past and you'll still deflect the shot, taking whatever damage is offset if you don't have a full 100 absorption item equipped - so get practicing!
