Considering the sheer volume of open world games released nowadays, it's unsurprising why an ever-increasing amount of people grow wearisome of the format. After all, it feels like by now, fans have seen the best and worst that the genre has to offer, so what could DG offer that's new? Well, how about a vast world that is complementary to the plot and its many themes?

John Garvin, the creative director behind Days Gone, mentioned how games of this more freedom-based format often distract the players from the real 'point' of the game. Referencing Far Cry, Garvin discussed how unrelated side activities and random missions can be fun but often make the player lose sight of what exactly they're trying to accomplish or what they're supposed to feel.

All the world events and actions you take when exploring the landscape will help you uncover hidden details about the protagonist's past, as well as a retrospective on what the world looked like before the dead walked among the living.

No fishing minigames to partake in, but what Garvin and his team promise is 20+ hours of pure open world content that will enrich the game and its characters, rather than losing them in favor of a massive map.
