Days Gone: 10 Gameplay Details You Need To Know

9. Deacon St. John… Bounty Hunter

Players experience this new apocalyptic world from the perspective of protagonist Deacon St. John. A very Daryl Dixon-esque character, Deacon St. John was part of a motorcycle club pre-apocalypse. Now post end of the world, Deacon passes his time by operating as a bounty hunter and mercenary.

The primary mission initiating device in the game appears to be task oriented goals that are assigned to you from the leaders of law abiding encampments. How much business could there possibly be for a bounty hunter in a world where it seems everything is trying to eat you? You'd think it would just be simpler to let the Freakers finish off your adversaries for you.

A more organic method of story telling would be to have events within the open world trigger missions. For example, during exploration maybe you find a girl chained to a tree, left there to be Freaker food, you as the player could accept a mission to bring those responsible to justice.

That sticks with the bounty hunter/mercenary theme without relying on the same -complete mission, return for new mission- type of storytelling that's all too common.

It's possible the developers have included a variety of story progressing devices, but from what we've seen so far they're sticking with the basics.
