Fairly early on you should unlock the residue bolts for the crossbow, but it can be a bit difficult to know how and when it's best to use them. The description for the new ammo type is kinda vague, but essentially they can be used on enemies to make them attack each other, making them a particularly useful tool for hunting packs of Freakers.

While sneaking around or scoping out a potential area for threats, these bolts can be essential in thinning the horde without being seen. Firing one into a pack will result in at least a few kills, as the Freakers will start scrapping with each other. Not only will this thin the herd a little, but it will take the attention off you, allowing you to slip around the back unnoticed.

The residue bolts can be powerful assets, but you need to know how and when to best use them, rather than just wasting them on a handful of enemies.
