The building mechanics in Death Stranding are pretty much central to its identity. While you could get around without them, forging new paths and building things that will help both you and other players get around easier is what mechanically supports the idea of 'rebuilding America' that the plot talks about so much.

Just because you can't build something in its entirety though - be it a bridge or a road - it doesn't mean you shouldn't contribute materials. You might not get the immediate reward of likes, but it will have a tangible effect on gameplay to spend everything rather than hoarding.

Roads in Episode 3 are especially useful, and with a full highway in place you can net yourself thousands of likes from difficult standard orders much easier.
