In the game's fifth episode, you'll learn that the first ever voidout took place in Manhattan, an extremely important and familiar location in Metal Gear Solid lore.

For starters, in the first Metal Gear Solid, Otacon confesses that his grandfather was part of the Manhattan Project, the American wartime research project which led to the creation of the world's first nuclear weapons.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, meanwhile, is set entirely on the Manhattan shoreline, culminating of course with the final boss battle between Raiden and Solidus Snake atop Manhattan's Federal Hall.
