Destiny 2 Beta: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

6. And Narrative Drive (Even A Villain!)

Destiny 2 Ghaul
Bungie

Speaking of things the first Destiny didn't do, we never much of a reason to fight. Yes, we'd been 'blessed' by the Traveller (the large orb in the sky), but aside from cleansing the galaxy from endless 'Darkness' (that came with said orb residing on Earth), there wasn't anything close to a villain or antagonistic force continuously in your way.

No more! At the close of Homecoming we get introduced to the latest line of gruff-voiced hulking alien barbarians in gaming, named Ghaul.

Walking onto the scene and decimating your avatar (before limply booting them off a ledge into the dark below), it established yet another thing that the first game lacked: Narrative setup and some much-needed drive.

Within the first few moments we understand than aliens are attacking Earth, and it needs defending. Simple. We then see their leader, who threatens to wipe everyone out. Ghaul is a clear villain, and now we a reason to work through the legions of other enemies on the road to taking him down.

It's the most basic of setups, but it's something, and for a game whose appeal boils down to "Dem guns sure do fire well!", it's enough.
