Destiny 2 Reviews: 11 Critical Reactions You Need To Know

6. It Doesn't Really Feel Like A Sequel

Destiny 2 Dawnblade Warlock

"Of course, all of this still feels like Destiny. The new social space, the Farm, is functionally the same as the Tower in the original. Finding loot and switching out your old gear still takes up a significant portion of your time. Enemies have been tweaked, but they're not wildly different, either. That's not necessarily bad, but it also makes me wonder if I'll see Destiny 2 as a sequel, rather than a half-step forward, the longer I play and the more I grind and repeat." - Gamespot
"Destiny 2 doesn't necessarily feel like a full sequel as much as an improved expansion, but that's not a bad thing if you just wanted more Destiny. " - Destructoid
"If the final version of Destiny 1, refined by the Taken King expansion pack, did absolutely nothing for you, chances are Destiny 2 won't magically win you over. On the other hand, if you're like me and appreciated some of what Destiny 1 offered in terms of "Halo as a never-ending co-op shooter," then you'll appreciate Destiny 2's strides to feel both familiar and repaired." - Ars Technica

All of the improvements considered, one of the more interesting comments among many reviewers was that Destiny 2 doesn't really feel like a sequel in the traditional sense.

Given the numerous updates Bungie has released for the original game over the years, this really just feels like an addition to that.

That's not to downplay the many positive changes, quality-of-life and otherwise, that Destiny 2 has made to the original formula, but at the same time it's not an Earth-shattering reinvention, and probably could've been a bigger, bolder follow-up at the end of the day.
