DOOM: 10 Things You Didn't Know You Could Do
5. Survive For WAY Longer
More an essential tip than anything hidden, it's worth pointing out just how different DOOM plays in comparison to almost everything else. Especially on consoles, we've been trained to pick off headshots, rush in for melee attacks and wait for health to recharge if things get too hairy.
For DOOM, those rules will mostly get you killed. The secret to surviving and really enjoying yourself comes down to both weapon variation and actively avoiding/kiting enemies into specific spots. You'll take a huge amount of damage if you get too close, so hang back, keep strafing and get enemies to group together, then unload with grenades, explosive shotgun shells, the chaingun or something as hilariously OTT as the lightning gun.
Focus fire on a smaller enemy if you need a health boost (Glory Kills always give health tokens) and if you run out of ammo, whip out the chainsaw. Kills with the latter yield huge amounts of ammunition for all weapons, so if you're running low, start a fight by slicing through the hordes and stocking up, and then turn the tables on them.
Any larger fight arenas come peppered with launch pads and power-ups, so treat the expanse like a multiplayer map and just go for broke. Every demon has certain animations that allow for huge windows of opportunity (such as the Baron of Hell's leaping smash), and if you constantly vary up your weapons, you'll rarely need to seek out separate ammo packs.
