5. Exploration Is Still Important

While modern shooters tend to be linear affairs, older shooters tended to be more exploratory in nature. The first two Doom games were pioneers of maze-like level design that placed just as much emphasis on exploration as shooting. While often times confusing, they rewarded patience and perseverance. Id Software has stated their intent to stay faithful to this tried and true formula while at the same time updating it to contemporary standards. While it€™s unlikely that the new Doom will rely on as many endless hallways and frustrating dead ends as the originals, as that would risk alienating modern gamers, exploration will still play a large part within the overall experience. Like the originals, you can expect to make your way through a maze in an effort to find the next combat zone. However, you can probably expect less obnoxiously hidden doors to impede your progress.
