DOOM Eternal Review: 8 Ups & 1 Down

Downs

1. Not Having A Better Solution To Weapon Switching On Console

DOOM Eternal

Yup, this really is the only negative I can think of. It's super minor, but if you want something approximating a "down", no it's not the climbing - that stuff is super snappy and fun - it's this.

See, DOOM Eternal now requires you to use the Slayer's full arsenal.

Whether through ammo scarcity or literal application (some weapons are better against some foes), you'll be constantly hopping between every last one of your guns, all the time.

On console this resigns you to "hold button, bring up the weapon wheel, point at segment with analogue stick, and let go", and for the vast majority of time, it works as intended.

There are those times though - in the heat of battle, your mind doing multiple calculations about who to shoot next, where and at what angle - where the wrong selection puts you in an infinitely worse place.

On PC this won't be a thing. There you've got the Slayer's entire arsenal available on hotkeys, and you can swap to exactly you want, whenever you want.

On console though, where iD have innovated and improved in every other area, it's a shame they couldn't think of something more immediate during the chaos of combat, than another slow motion weapon wheel.
