Dungeons And Dragons: 10 Essential Tips For New Players

7. You Are Not In Competition With Your Party

It’s easy to join a group of friends for a table-top game, know that you’re going to be there for a few hours, see dice and pieces scattered around, and automatically develop Monopoly Syndrome. Clearly these bastards are not to be trusted and you’ll need to f**k them over before they f**k you over!

Well, D&D requires players to take a more open-minded approach. You are not playing against each other; you’re a team- playing to finish quests, rack up loot and kick dragons where the sun don’t shine. To use another video game analogy, think of your party as companions in a game like Dragon Age or Greedfall. Everyone’s bringing something to the table.

Loot should be divided equally when possible and with special items going to those who would benefit from them most, with the understanding that this will, in turn, benefit the party most. Be sure to heal and help each other out in combat encounters, or your game could end quicker than you’d intended.

Most importantly, you should be sure to involve new players, especially those who may be a bit shy at first, as much as possible. Band together, make sure everyone’s having a good time, and roundhouse kick a few goblins as a team.
