E3 2018: 13 Insane Announcements That Could Actually Happen
3. Sony Reveals A Handheld Hybrid Console
The astronomical success of the Nintendo Switch has caused the industry as a whole to appreciate the appeal of a handheld-console hybrid, one which appeals to those who love playing games on the move while also catering to those who enjoy high(ish)-fidelity graphics.
As such, don't be completely shocked if Sony announces a companion peripheral to the PS4, a hybrid platform that allows players to take their PS4 on the move (albeit at a significantly reduced resolution).
How Likely Is It?: It's definitely a shot in the dark, and there are literally dozens of reasons why it probably shouldn't happen: the Switch is killing it, Sony's disastrous lack of support for the Vita and the likelihood of a PS5 announcement in the next 18-or-so months.
That said, if Sony can get the messaging right - marketed more as a PS4 accompaniment than a replacement - and introduce the hybrid as a mid-budget solution to playing the PS4 on the move, it could find a firm niche for itself.
Still, there haven't been any leaks pointing to the possibility, so it's an outside bet at best.
