E3 2018: Every High-Profile Video Game Confirmed So Far

12. Death Stranding

Second of Sony's "pillars" going into their conference, Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima's most ambitious and experimental game. The Metal Gear maestro was tied to that franchise for almost 30 years, and you can tell that with a blank canvas, he's had a few million ideas just waiting to be executed on.

Right now it's very hard to say what Death Stranding actually "is". We know from interviews with Kojima that it will focus on "sticks and ropes"; metaphors for aspects that push players away, and bring them together.

Death Stranding will have a multiplayer component, will be open-world like MGS V, and appears to be set in a strange apocalyptic hellscape where the very machinations that wield and control time itself are spinning out of control.

The name references Cetacean Stranding, a state where species of whales beach and kill themselves for apparently no reason. It looks like Kojima is applying his usual brand of philosophy and western action to a far wider subject matter than just "retired soldier fights evil terrorists", so here's to this being outstanding.
