E3 2019: 10 Biggest Surprises At Nintendo's Showcase

The Lord Mario giveth and giveth and giveth.

Now that was a pretty cool Nintendo Showcase, and easily one of the highlights of E3, with a lot to process and emotions running high. It's safe to say if you weren't hyperventilating by the end, you just don't like games.

There were some disappointing no shows too - no mention of an HD Metroid Prime Trilogy re-release for example, but that doesn't mean we won't see them in the future. We also saw more of the things we knew were coming, and for Luigi's Mansion 3 and Astral Chain it was great to see them given more exposure and play time.

However, as always, it was the surprises that captured everyone's hearts and imaginations. There were games buyers had been hoping for since the Switch's launch, plus a ton we had no idea we wanted.

Either way, something probably set your hype into overdrive, and although it sucks we have to wait over a year for some of the following, it'll surely be worth it.

Until we reach the blessed day when we can finally get our hands on these coveted little cartridges, it's worth reflecting on what made for so much triumphant fist-pumping in the first place.

10. Animal Crossing

To be fair, we knew this was coming but it was nice to finally see some actual gameplay and not just Tom Nook being creepy in his office.

Amidst an event full of loud, fast and violent games it was nice to see others enjoy some R and R in a game based around the simple charm and soothing calm of living on a desert island. Like taking a warm bath in your Switch (don't actually try that!)

If the gameplay on show is anything to go by, it looks like Animal Crossing will apply its style and mechanics to a secluded spot, and encourage you to build and adapt. Like a friendly version of The Forest or Subnautica.

Animal Crossing has never been about radical change and speed, its about stopping to smell the roses once in a while. Oh, and settling up on Tom Nook's astronomical debt.
