E3 2019: 10 Rumoured Video Games You Need To Know About
8. Splinter Cell
Splinter Cell is well on its way to becoming a dead franchise, and it needs a new game soon to turn things around. The last title was 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which was decent but had mid-00s sensibilities, and five years is a long time in gaming.
With gaming moving towards open world roaming or pick up and play online shooters (and in the case of Destiny or Anthem, a combination of both), it’s hard to see a place for a tight stealth game like Splinter Cell. Niches will always exist, of course, but with Splinter Cell’s legacy and Ubisoft publishing, a niche following isn’t really enough.
Despite all this, there’s growing evidence that Splinter Cell could get (at least) one last hurrah. In an interview with GameInformer, Ubisoft’s Chief Creative Officer Serge Hascoet talked about some of Ubi’s dormant franchises. ‘It’s not a question of will, it’s a question of means’, Hascoet said of Splinter Cell and Prince Of Persia, suggesting that with enough resources, Splinter Cell will make a comeback.
There’s no smoke without fire, and whispers about Sam Fisher’s future remain consistent. There’s a lot of people out there not willing to give up on him yet.
