E3 2019: 20 Huge Video Game Announcements You Need To Know
5. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Releases March 3, 2020 & Comes On Two Discs
Square Enix's presser kicked off with a mighty bang, as the company finally dropped the curtain on their long-awaited Final Fantasy 7 Remake with a glossy new trailer and lengthy gameplay blowout.
The release of the game's first episode was confirmed earlier during E3 week - it's March 3, 2020, by the way - and during the stage show it was confirmed that its scale is large enough to require two discs.
This is especially surprising given that this first instalment is reportedly confined to the Midgar section of the game, which in the original comprised roughly 20-25% of the entire experience.
It raises a number of questions over how many instalments FF7R will truly end up being, whether or not the games will spill onto next-gen platforms, and also what naming convention the future titles will take on.
These mysteries aside, the gameplay footage extensively demonstrated the game's delicious combat system, which appears to have found a solid compromise between real-time and turn-based fighting.
The game's early Guard Scorpion boss fight has been expanded significantly from the original game into a more cinematic and drawn-out affair, which seems to reflect Square's overall design philosophy behind the game.
If they can do this without creating a bloated experience that effectively exploits the fanbase across countless releases, then few will be complaining. It's definitely an if, though.
Fans also got their first glimpse of Tifa in action, and mercifully, her character design has been toned down significantly from prior iterations, with body proportions verging on the more realistic side of things. Phew.
