E3: 9 Biggest Bombshells From Microsoft's Conference
2. New Tomb Raider? Yes, Please!
It may just be a trailer, but if Rise of The Tomb Raider can cash the check its debut trailer wrote, we may be in some Dark Knight territory here - meaning that when you pare the experience of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Batman Begins actually becomes an even better movie because of all the various little details that movie sets up for The Dark Knight. Similarly, it's possible The Rise of The Tomb Raider could make 2013's Tomb Raider better from a story standpoint. While Tomb Raider was a great fun, the narrative felt a little flat as Lara was thrown to the wolves in such a brutal way that there was barely any time for her character to show personality beyond screaming in pain. The reboot just had so much to establish regarding gameplay and story exposition that Lara got fairly shafted; she was bland. She was vanilla yogurt. And it looks like her next adventure may add some flavor to the bottom of her cup. Thanks in part to a wonderful monologue by Lara's therapist, we see the various adventures she has had since the last game, while we hear about the toll they took on her psyche to the point where she was having flashbacks and even dressing like an Assassin's Creed character. As the trailer reaches its climax and we see her shoot a guy in the head with her bow, the music swells and it's revealed Lara is in control of her own fate. Chills man. Chills. While entirely CGI, the new Tomb Raider holds much promise, especially if Square-Enix can borrow some of the headier guys from the studio that makes Hitman.
