Elder Scrolls 6: 5 Things We Do Want To See (And 5 We Don't)
9. Don't: An Uninspired World
When it comes to casting a fantasy world into existence, questions come to mind. How similar should it be to the real world? What will make it fantastical? How can this feel real yet not at the same time?
Thus far, the response to these questions from Bethesda has been relatively successful. The worlds of Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and other lands have all had an identity. Some felt like a medieval world steeped in our history, like Skyrim, and others a little more alien such as Marrowind.
A pitfall that the developers cannot fall into is lacking in creativity when it comes to the world crafting. Players mustn't be greeted with a setting that is too similar to what they've already experienced. If the world isn't going to feel unique, then what motive do players have to explore it?
Bethesda has created extraordinary worlds before, and they must do it again. Otherwise, it could mean the death of player enjoyment for the title.
