Elder Scrolls VI: 10 Simple Fixes That Would Improve Everything

10. Give The Guards Some Empathy

Having a functional guard systems within the regions and cities of any Elder Scrolls game is essential. The simple fact is that players have to have some sort of exterior force policing their activities and maintain order to make sure they stay focussed enough on the tasks of the game, and of course to make sure they don't just slaughter all of the NPCs in the game without reprimand. Unfortunately this guard system is not always entirely fair, and Skyrim players will have undoubtedly fallen foul of the law through no fault of their own on more than one occasion. While the guards can make useful allies - if only as human shields - in certain skirmishes against dragons and other such large enemies, their presence can often lead to further hindrance. While players are swiping and slashing for their lives, it is very easy to accidentally nick an ally with one wayward stroke. No harm done, though, right? Wrong. While many companions in the game can be placated after players have accidentally damaged them during combat, the same can not be said for guards. There is no way to engage conversation and get over the incident with some hearty banter about "the heat of the moment" and so the only option is to accept punishment. Well, there is the option to make matters worse and just slay the guard, but who would do that, eh? If the guards had a little empathy for the players in this situations, the policing system would be far less of a frustration.
