Every Mainline Console Zelda Game Ranked
9. Four Swords Adventures
A nice diversion from the tried and tested formula, Four Swords Adventures' status as a "mainline" Zelda game is debatable.
While the game's Hyrulean Adventure campaign switches up the gameplay a fair bit, consisting of eight worlds divided into stages and discarding the series' exploration aspects entirely, Four Swords Adventures forms a vital part of the Zelda timeline, with villain Vaati becoming an unlikely staple in the series.
While the pick up and play multiplayer-oriented gameplay isn't essential, Four Swords Adventures is fun to play in small bouts, one of the few Zelda games that can be enjoyed in bursts without having to worry about how to schedule a 100-hour adventure into an already busy lifestyle.
While the game can be played alone, the unique multiplayer concept (while being admittedly a bit clumsy) provides a genuinely sociable experience for a franchise usually associated with solo gaming - a concept just begging to be explored on the multiplayer-friendly Switch.
Transferring Wind Waker's cell-shaded graphics to a top-down 2D environment, Four Swords Adventures also boasts one of the most charming art styles of any console Zelda game, one which really should have been revisited for 2019's Links Awakening re-release.
