Every Mainline Console Zelda Game Ranked

8. Skyward Sword

Ocarina of Time
Nintendo

Skyward Sword absolutely brims with brilliant ideas. Unfortunately, the execution isn't always great - with fans and critics alike especially panning the hit and miss nature of the Wii MotionPlus controls.

While having 1:1 sword swinging simulation sounded great in theory, the less than reliable motion controls made Skyward Sword a chore at times, tasking players with continually pausing the game to reset the MotionPlus controller -- only to have to do so again a few sword swings later.

Criticisms of Skyward Sword didn't stop there, though, with many fans unhappy about the game's linearity. Though Zelda titles had been growing increasingly linear over the years, Skyward Sword provided absolutely no extra areas to explore at all, with all the game's side quests relegated to one central hub world and a few empty islands floating in the sky.

Still, Skyloft remains one of the most memorable towns in the series' history, and the game seemed to pay more attention to side quests than any other entry in the series since Majora's Mask. While, admittedly, Fi was annoying and repeated boss battles were intrusive and uninspired, Skyward Sword still brought some fresh ideas to the table.

As well as having the most fleshed out story and memorable characters of any Zelda game to date, a tonne of Skyward Sword's better ideas (the ability to upgrade items, and catch insects and monster parts to beef up potions) made it into Breath Of The Wild - albeit implemented in a more fleshed-out way.
