Every Mainline Resident Evil Ranked From Worst To Best

2. Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 Remake
Capcom

Resident Evil 4 changed the course of the series forever as it shifted towards a more action-horror approach. Unlike previous games, players were put in the over the shoulder, third-person perspective while having melee moves and quick-time-events. Yet despite these new features, RE4 never forgets that at its core, it is a scary game.

From the opening village ambush to encountering the Regenerators, the game is tense and keeps players on their toes. The shooting was intuitive and the new style led to some precise shots at the risk of mobility. And despite being more spectacle-heavy, RE4 ups the ante by increasing the number of enemies on screen with the risk of being overwhelmed.

Other new additions include unlockable weapons, tasks from the Merchant, and the Mercenaries mode that led to a 3DS spinoff game. There were also additional levels in the game such as the Ada Wong segments included in subsequent releases.

Though not every aspect of Resident Evil 4 has aged well like the QTEs feeling outdated and the escort missions, its impact to the video game industry is nearly as big as the original.
