1. Horizon Zero Dawn

For the top spot, a game that combines immaculately polished gameplay, original art direction, top-notch animation, game mechanics that just feel natural and enjoyable to pick up, and a story that posits one of the most poignant questions in gaming history.

If you're after spoilers I'd recommend delving into this, but outside of Aloy discovering her place in the world, how the robo-dinosaurs around her came to be and what role she can play in saving the locals, Horizon Zero Dawn is a career-best for Guerilla.

Free from the shackles of developing endless Killzone sequels, there's a passion inherent to how Horizon plays that comes across immediately. You can tell Guerrilla needed to make something so freeing, so filled with questions and expressions on the world around us, and it's so damn colourful, being they were lost in a brown n' grey colour palette for 13 years.

On its surface, Horizon Zero Dawn is about slaying giant mechanical dinosaurs and harvesting their parts for better gear, but below that - much like delving underground in-game - there's a far more interesting and impactful world at play.
