Not much has been revealed about the actual story of The Last Guardian, but details of its basic premise have been widely known for some time. The set up, like its predecessors, is simple: a young boy wakes up to find himself being held captive in a massive, foreboding castle; his body covered in strange tattoos that previously weren't there. The boy escapes captivity, after which he comes across a giant canine, bird like creature, chained and injured. He frees the intriguingly bizarre beast, and the two set off to escape the castle together.

This premise clearly draws from various elements of director Fumito Ueda's previous games. In fact, Ueda was inspired to make the game when he saw how attached so many gamers were to the horse Argo in Shadow of the Colossus. Ueda decided to build an entire game around the relationship between man and beast in an effort to explore that dynamic in a more in depth and emotionally compelling way.

You can also expect this story to be told in the same minimalist and stylistic fashion that made Ico and Shadow of the Colossus so endearing, though The Last Guardian will incorporate voiceover, something the other games did not, in order to provide better context to the emotional state of the boy.

But of course he is only half of this equation. There's also the creature itself...
