Fallout: 10 Biggest Controversies

9. A True RPG? – Fallout 4

Fallout 76

This may not even seem too controversial to some, but Fallout 4 undoubtedly signified a departure from the heavily RPG focused gameplay of previous iterations. The heavily customisable character creation and distinctly slower branching storytelling of Bethesda’s earlier games, such as PC exclusive Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, is notably absent in Fallout 4.

Instead, in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, Bethesda started stripping the more intricate elements of these earlier games, in favour of making more consumer friendly and accessible titles.

There are a few gameplay changes within Fallout 4 which are markedly different than these classic titles.

Namely, the shooter-centric combat lessened the need to approach specific encounters with a particular character build. Also, the lack of branching dialogue options coupled with the removal of the morality system, meant that the once expansive story felt much more constrictive.

Whilst still retaining much of what made the franchise so iconic, the change in the classic formula that Fallout 4 delivered, will remain divisive for fans new and old alike.
