Fallout 4: 10 Key Lessons From 2013's Biggest Games

10. Character Development - The Last Of Us

The Last of Us was arguably the greatest video game of not just 2013, but possibly the last 5 years: it was a superbly atmospheric odyssey, and as a post-apocalyptic tale, is an excellent point of comparison for Fallout. More so than for its gameplay, The Last of Us was lauded almost universally for its characters and story. Through the dialogues between protagonists Joel and Ellie during the game, we come to care for them deeply, such that getting to the next checkpoint is not merely a matter of progression, but of preservation. This is aided hugely by the pitch-perfect voice acting, which is easily some of the best the medium has ever seen. This all ties directly into the story itself: while the story is about reaching a resistance group and hopefully finding a cure for the disease ravaging the world, the story is inherently character-driven, and therefore makes for an extremely immersive experience. The Fallout games have always been full of colourful characters, but to give us a genuine, human bond with another character while taking advantage of the new generation of life-like graphics should make for a Fallout game with more emotion and feeling than ever before.
