Fallout 4: 10 Things That Would Make It Better For Newcomers
8. Difficulty Spikes
Fallout 3's difficulty tends not to be regarded as a defining feature like something as teeth-gratingly frustrating as Dark Souls, but if you don't balance your Stimpaks and shotguns shells accordingly, travelling off into the Wasteland for a spot of adventure will get you as far as a swift reset at the previous checkpoint. One of the things that comes with creating such a gigantic game world complete with far-off landmarks you can actually visit, is the impetus to do exactly that. Back when GTA III first truly defined the 'open world experience' their method of restricting content was literally to put some barriers between you and the place you were trying to get to (and as you were in a bustling city, select placement of roadworks was apt). However Rockstar's magnum opus didn't have too many spikes in difficulty across its runtime regardless of how much you explored, but with Fallout if the direction is to push towards an open world, a regenerating health bar or a Far Cry-style self-healing animation would go a long way to making you feel far more comfortable wandering off the beaten path.
