Fallout 5: 10 Latest Rumours You Need To Know
6. An Overhauled Dialogue System
Bethesda has had plenty of time to reflect on what did, and what didn't work in Fallout 4, and no doubt their findings will help shape future entries in the role-playing series.
Speaking to Gamespot, director Todd Howard said he was proud of the game's action and RPG mechanics, but felt the dialogue system could have been improved.
"We do like to try new things and we have some successes. I think the shooting in Fallout 4 is really good - I think it plays really well. Obviously the way we did some dialogue stuff, that didn't work as well. But I know the reasons we tried that - to make a nice interactive conversation - but [it was] less successful than some other things in the game. For us, we take that feedback. I think long-term."
Many fans took issue with Fallout 4's streamlined dialogue system, hence why the mod community addressed the issue with an add-on which replaced the interface with a hard list of responses for players to select. Bethesda also did its best to remedy the situation in the Far Harbour DLC by giving users more response options.
The fact Howard says the studio is looking to implement player feedback about dialogue in the "long-term" suggests the improvements will take shape in Fallout 5, and the fact he admits the interface didn't work as well as they hoped suggests an overhaul rather than a few tweaks here and there.
