It's an ugly word that never fails to elicit groans from potential customers, but company frontman Todd Howard worked his silver tongue on-stage at this year's E3 to soften the blow, ensuring the crowd that not a single additional purchase in Fallout 76 would provide in-game advantages.
Unlike the obvious offenders, Bethesda's remained true to its word and, in providing further details of how Fallout 76's premium currency works, has calmed any fears that it may have changed its mind. Atoms, as they're officially called, can be bought or earned in-game and redeemed for a walk-in wardrobe's worth of apparel, as well as decal and customisation options for Power Armour and housing.
Most importantly, Bethesda says that the currency will be easily obtainable in-game via completing challenges, quests and various other milestones, making their availability for direct purchase more a matter of preference than necessity.
All that remains is for Bethesda to confirm price points for Atoms.
