Fallout 76: 10 Take-Aways From Bethesda's E3 Conference
9. The Setting
It was confirmed that the game will be set in the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia, on a map roughly four times bigger than Fallout 4's. The world looks a lot less war-torn than other games, with trees and marshes more important than the central cities of other games.
Todd Howard described how the game was made on an updated engine to that of previous games, which gives objects sixteen times the detail and increases rendering distance significantly.
A map shown illustrates six main areas - Ash Heap, The Forest (which houses Vault 76), Toxic Valley, Savage Divide, The Mire and Cranberry Bog. A later map, shown from the pip-boy menu illustrates which of these areas have which terrain. The Savage Divide seems rather sparse, whilst The Toxic Valley is more mountainous.
