Fallout 76: 8 New Details You Need To Know

7. Mutations

Fallout 76 Vault Boy
Bethesda

With all the weird and wonderful wildlife that roams the wastes in Fallout's universe, that we're still confined to experiencing the world in a mundane set of human skin is surprising, to say the least.

It somewhat makes sense - Fallout 3's narrative would never have worked with a super mutant playing the role of Lone Wanderer - but with Fallout 76's multiplayer focus placing far greater emphasis on individuality than ever before, there's never been a more perfect opportunity for Bethesda to cut loose and let players experience post-apocalyptic life from a different perspective.

Confirmation of that is still forthcoming, but the developer has confirmed the inclusion of mutations, special traits that can be acquired separately from normal level progression.

Prolonged exposure to radiation, for example, can trigger a mutation in your character, bestowing a positive (and negative) effect to your avatar. It's up to you whether you let the foreign body run its course or seek out a cure, but some carry with them visual effects, leading to the suspicion that mutations will be a means of introducing ghouls and perhaps even super mutants as playable characters.

Fingers crossed.
