Man United may have bored everyone to sleep last season, but Louis van Gaal should be commended for at least fixing what had been a leaky defence. With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic departing the club, the Red Devils had been shipping for fun until the Dutchman shored it up.

They may have missed out on Champions League qualification, but they at least can be proud of their joint-best defensive record with Spurs. Jose Mourinho is no defensive slouch either, and will be looking to keep the defence finely tuned this season.

The addition of Eric Bailly should only improve matters further. However, while you should expect clean sheets from the Ivorian, and plenty of them, perhaps don’t go fantasising over any goalscoring exploits - he has only ever bagged one.
