Far Cry 4: 10 Things We Want To See

8. More Of The Clash And More Diegetic Sound

Far Cry as a series has always done well with diegesis in terms of its sound design. Car radios turn on when you turn the engine on, bars and lecherous dives have beat up long wave radios idely humming the same three tunes over and over. Where Far Cry 3 jumped the shark in the best possible way was with its music from chart topping stars. We simply need to mention the Skrillex mission to remind you that Ubisoft have their music choice down perfectly for specific situations. However, with so much world building in terms of sound around the character; chirping birds, croaking lizards, the thundering footfalls of a charging Cassowary behind you it comes as something of a shame that Jason Brody didn't put on some headphones before he started burning the fields of drugs. Some might say that it's simply a hallucination, like the others which are used to such great effect throughout the game, but the song starts playing before you've so much as taken your lighter out of your pocket. It's an amazing ability to conjure Skrillex and Damian Marley out of the air at will, but if we're really picky, we would have preferred it to come from somewhere in the world. After all, why mar an otherwise perfect moment by pointing out that all the diegetic music and sound effects so far have been meaningless?
