There'll be many players who go their entire FIFA playing lives without knowing about work rates, but when you do, you'll never look at squad building in the same way again. Simply put, every player's work rates influences the way they react to situations and they can often cost you dearly. It's a nifty feature but it can be mighty annoying when you've built a beast squad and one player's work rates doesn't fit into your shape. There is where the special cards would come in, much like position changes, allowing certain players to change their attacking or defensive mentality. It'd work with player instructions and save you from launching your controller across the room because David Luiz has gone off on an adventure.
