FIFA 22 Review: 7 Ups & 5 Downs

4. A Flick Of The Stick

The option to switch controls to a nearby player and run them into space has been part of FIFA's gameplay for a while, but...it sucked in FIFA 21. After all, what's the point in choosing which direction your teammate sprints if you have approx 0.01 seconds to hit three-four button combos and make it happen?

Those tight windows made this feature clunky as all hell.

This year's game solves that by dropping the overall speed of movement. Now, running a nearby pal into space and then playing the ball through to them feels much smoother. The same can be said of teammate intelligence; hit L1/LB and players spring into forward motion. This serves two purposes.

One, the runner can draw defenders away from the player who actually has the ball. Two, it means you're less likely to run into a mate and scream at the injustice of it all. EA got this spot on. It feels great to combine through balls with these speedy counters.
