5. Stilted Commentary

FIFA 22
EA Sports

First, the negatives.

Commentary has taken a step backwards this year. Stewart Robson, who has replaced Lee 'I Bloody Hate Football' Dixon, just doesn't cut it. Derek Rae is lively and natural too, and that only makes it worse; Robson sounds so mechanical and forced. It's super-obvious that he's just reading lines rather than having a conversation.

The whole experience is slightly jarring, and it's at odds with EA's superior presentation elsewhere. Also, it's not a new whinge, but only having one commentary duo to plump for is a step in the wrong direction after previous titles also offered Martin Tyler and Alan Smith. What happened to that choice?

Sadly, not even the arrival of Alex Scott as a pitch side reporter can save the day. She barely showed up during playthroughs of Career Mode as Arsenal, and it's slightly concerning that EA failed to recreate the Sky Sports Premier League match vibe. That, one would think, is why she was drafted in.
