FIFA 22 Review: 7 Ups & 5 Downs

4. Microtransactions Remain

FIFA 22
EA Sports

It's bloody Groundhog Day with these things, isn't it?

EA Sports will continue to push loot boxes as a major part of Ultimate Team until some sort of law is passed to prevent them from doing so. Sure, there's still fun to be had in FUT without spending more real-world cash, but the 'pay to win' incentives definitely exist, and they're off-putting to say the least.

They're also getting right in the road for this player - he'd love to try out some of the new bells and whistles EA added to the mode in FIFA 22, but he just cannot stomach Ultimate Team's unhealthy obsession with luring more dosh out of one's wallet. It's crass, it's insulting and it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Fingers crossed something gets done about this in time for FIFA 23. It'd be nice to see EA give some more attention to other features in the game (Career, Volta and the like) without constantly pouring most of their resources into this loot-riddled monster.
