Final Fantasy: 15 Most Brutal Boss Battles

2. Omega Weapon (FFVIII)

For Omega Weapon, think the previous Ultima Weapon, but now in a more fetching duck-egg blue colour, the pastel-inspired bathroom equivalent of Ultima's feature-wall aubergine. Oh, and it's also a much, much bigger a*sehole.

Unlike any previous game in the series, Final Fantasy VIII made a huge alteration in having its enemies level-up in proportion to the protagonist's advancement. As such, it was no longer possible to overcome any challenge by committing to the grind and overpowering your tenacious nemesis. Boo!

Instead, we were forced to think, which is tiring, especially considering FFVIII's tactics boil down to an elaborate game of delegation. Assigning GFs so everybody gets the required benefits is more an exercise in human resource management than battle preparation. And that's before having to start the file cataloguing that is junctioning magic.

Like many super-bosses on this list, the honour of exterminating the enemy is apparently reward enough, the Mark of Omega being an utterly pointless accolade for our efforts. Why not push yourself through hell and back just to be able to say, "well, I did it"?

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
