Final Fantasy: 15 Most Brutal Boss Battles

11. Warmech (FFI)

Final Fantasy III may have been an absolute b*stard, but it was by design. The original Final Fantasy, on the other hand, stumbled into its b*astardry, not unlike an unwelcome child born out of forbidden passion. For the first entry in the series, Square were taking a wild stab in the dark with their last-gasp RPG's mechanics - which is incidentally what many players received as a result.

Strictly speaking, Warmech isn't a boss, but the robotic terror might as well be. Encountered by unlucky players with a probability of 3/64 on just a single tile of the Floating Fortress' narrow bridge, Warmech is a guardian troll supremely more powerful than any of the first game's actual bosses. With an ability to regenerate its health every round, and the Atomize attack which will quickly turn the party to dust, only the most over-leveled of adventurers have any chance of surviving its sudden assault. Keep in mind this is a game without save points in its dungeons. Fury abounds.

If Warmech wasn't bad enough, there's another, actual boss at the end of the bridge it guards. Cruel.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
