Because Square are trying to tick so many boxes - one for newcomers, one for returning fans, one to replicate the impact FF7 had, another for where the franchise is today - it means they attempt some fan nods, mentions of lore and other "wider" elements that will pass you by.

The bulk of everything totally works for fresh eyes, it's worth noting that if you can experience this fiction through the original, I'd recommend that first.
