Final Fantasy 7 Remake: 8 Things NOBODY Wants To Admit
1. THAT Ending
Without question the biggest talking point for those who've finished Final Fantasy VII Remake is just what in God's name was going on with that ending?
In brief: Throughout the game, Cloud and crew are haunted by spectres, who are seemingly trying to ensure the course of history flows correctly. Any deviation from fate's intention - in other words, the plot of the original game - sees these chronology wonks spring into action. Barrett takes one for the team in Shinra HQ, but he shouldn't have.
The ghouls - Whispers, as it happens - step in to save him.
This all culminates with a battle against Kingdom Hearts' Chernabog in a dimensional rift, as Cloud and friends fight the very concept of destiny itself. Oh, and then there's a battle with Sephiroth, just because. Had to get One Winged Angel in there somewhere.
Oh my, it's all so very subversive, and basically Tetsuya Nomura's way of saying, "stop telling me to remake FFVII" ... whilst also remaking FFVII.
And like everything, it isn't exactly subtle; the Whispers are phantoms, which coincidentally, sounds a lot like fandom. It's definitely interesting, and has certainly sparked more discussion than a 1:1 retelling of the original five hours ever could.
But is it good, or as, as some quarters have called it, "genius"?
Or is it subversion for subversion's sake, and an excuse for Square-Enix to do whatever the f*ck they want with the series going forwards, whilst selling it on the cache of its nostalgic appeal?
That's up to you to decide.
But yes, it's that.
