Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Every Confirmed & Leaked Detail We Know

5. New ATB system

Final Fantasy VII Remake, though broadly faithful to the source material, isn't a simple one-to-one reproduction of the original with gilded graphics. The combat in particular has received a hefty overhaul, with the classic turn-based system replaced with a new, action-oriented real-time endeavour.

Despite the fundamental changes, a few familiar features have escaped defenestration - if only in spirit, not function. The Active Time Bar - the meter that would fill before granting a player character a turn - is one such survivor. This time around, segments of the bar accumulate courtesy of attacks. When full, special abilities such as items, magic, and brand new character-specific moves can be deployed - each consuming a portion of the bar.

Basically, it's absolutely nothing like the original ATB, but hey, the letters are there, so that's nice.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
