Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Every Confirmed & Leaked Detail We Know

In the original Final Fantasy VII, weapons were a relatively simple affair.

Whilst frolicking out in the wild, Cloud and crew could either buy or stumble upon an entire arsenal, which just so happened to be specifically appropriate for their unique abilities (how many people are out there fighting baddies with a megaphone?). Besides their core stats, the only other property weapons possessed was materia slots, either linked or individual. Both remained static; improvement meant scouring the world for a slightly shinier sword (or set of shurikens).

The sharp pointy sticks are a little more organic in the remake. By spending SP, individual weapons can "unlock the Core Materia hidden within", allowing upgrades which enhance the wielder's stats in areas such as Max HP, Attack Power, and Magic.

In addition, weapons now carry their own unique abilities, which increase in proficiency the more they're used. Basically, it's a system that enables you to waste loads of time fine tuning a sword, only to find a better one underneath an innkeeper's rug.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
