We've had to wait nearly half a decade for Final Fantasy VII's remake, and even when it does hit shelves, it'll only be half finished.

That's because Square Enix, wanting to do justice to the scope and scale of the project, whilst coincidentally reaping the profits several times over - made the difficult decision to split the game into several episodes.

Episode 1 will focus solely on the game's Midgar plotline, roughly equating to the opening fifteen hours or so of the original. As the starring location in its own standalone chapter, the area is expected to be expanded significantly on its PS1 depiction.

So how many episodes will there be? We can't say - producer Yoshinori Kitase told Kotaku's Jason Schreier back in June that Square Enix don't even know themselves.

What we do know is that Episode 2 is already deep into production, even before the first has exited the vault. Tetsuya Nomura, speaking in a Square Enix blog post, boasted he is "confident that playing [Episode 2] will expand your expectations just like the world beyond Midgar."

Blimey.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
