In the days before the internet was prevalent as a source of spoilers, the scene was one of genuine shock for most players, as they witnessed Aeris's unexpected demise at the hands of the merciless Sephiroth, leaving them permanently without one of the game's main characters. With the poignancy of Nobuo Uematsu's soundtrack playing in the background, the scene perfectly showcases Sephiroth's malevolence, and gives an insight into why he is frequently considered to be amongst the greatest villains in video game history.
