Final Fantasy: Who Is The Best Character From Each Game?
12. III - Xande
Final Fantasy III is the true odd one out when it comes to Final Fantasy games, having not even been made available in English until a DS version appeared sixteen years after the game's Japan-only release. This rebuilt the game from the ground up and beefed up the story, which was a welcome addition given that the original reverted back to the formula of Final Fantasy I and put players back into the shoes of four nameless 'Warriors Of Light'.
The foursome of Luneth, Arc, Refia and Ingus do very little though, their introductory sequences aside, following in the footsteps of their predecessors and observing various subplots (Aria's sacrifice and the Alus/Gorn scenario being highlights) without much in the way personal involvement.
Such a dearth of options leaves Xande, the game's surprisingly complex villain. 'Rewarded' with mortality as a gift from his master, much of the game revolves around his twisted plot to reclaim the eternal life that he previously enjoyed by freezing the passage of time.
Though he was revealed to be serving a higher villain at the last minute (copied ad verbatim with Zemus/Zeromus in IV and Kuja/Necron in IX), Xande is nothing if not persistent. His lack of presence lets him down, but his actions are a highlight in what is largely an underwhelming game.
