Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns: 6 Things We Learned From The Demo

3. Story Is Still Convoluted

The plot of Lightning Returns is a tricky subject to tackle; it€™s both the reason we€™re even bothering with the game yet the aspect we€™re dreading most to experience. There€™s a love/hate relationship with the narrative because at times the characters can be endearing, but its plot is written so poorly and confusingly that it€™s often hard to care about anything going on. XIII-2 didn€™t help things either by introducing time travel. You€™d be hard-pressed to find anyone that could summarise that mess into something that makes sense. Lightning Returns seems to be diving further down the rabbit hole by introducing Snow as the villain this time. Apparently he€™s upset that Serah sacrificed herself for the good of humanity during the closing moments of 13-2, and has a broken soul. That€™s seriously the dialogue in the game; his soul is broken. And Lightning can apparently manipulate souls, because she€™s a trusted warrior of God. The world is also ending in 13 days, which is probably the most exciting plot point so far. Everything else just isn€™t very promising and is filled with ridiculously vague writing, referring to the most random things like the source of the Chaos. And yes, the subtitles capitalise chaos like that, but hell if I know what it actually is. There€™s always a chance that the demo is filled with confusion because we€™re being tossed into a specific section, but judging from past history, don€™t hold your breath for a captivating narrative. Closure is promised however, and that€™s something to get excited about.
