Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns: 6 Things We Learned From The Demo

4. Roughly Half Of The Game Will Be Spent Playing Dress Up

We will explore the actual combat mechanics in-depth later on, but one of its keystones is actually dressing Lightning up in various costumes €“ called Schematas - that each grant her with different combat abilities. For example, there is a Black Mage outfit €“ which in a brilliant move strikingly resembles a classic outfit €“ that gives her more offensive spells such as Blizzaga. There are six different Schematas to toy around with in the demo, and it€™s certainly fun giving them all a spin out of curiosity as to what abilities each one has, but there is one glowing distraction caused from the system that truly paints it as silly; none of the outfits actually align with the dramatic narrative, resulting in Lightning looking completely ridiculous and out of character. These aren€™t subtle changes like variants on colours or additional accessories, but different outfits from head to toe. In addition to looking silly, almost all the outfits are updated versions of classic Final Fantasy character outfits. There€™s even a Cloud DLC outfit for pre-ordering the game complete with the legendary Buster Sword! Lightning should be saving the world, not cos-playing as iconic characters of the past. It€™s not a game breaking feature, just one that€™s inclusion is baffling and distracting.
